We started off the day with silent reading and some notes on adverbs. We then finished watching Fantastic Mr. Fox and students completed a plot analysis for the movie. After that, they started working on a review booklet for the short story unit.

Have a great weekend!

Today we started off with ah lesson on complete sentences; then students had more time to work on their Animal Farm paragraphs. They will be due Tuesday. After that, we went to the library to get Sightlines 10 textbooks. Subsequently, I gave a mini-lesson on the history of La Violencia in Columbia, as it's the context for the story we discussed today: "Lather and Nothing Else". We will continue looking at the story next class.

We started off class with a lesson on capitalization. After that, students started working on a literary paragraph for Animal Farm. They will have time to continue this next class. After that, we read, discussed and completed questions for the story "Terrible Things" by Eve Bunting.

During the second half of class, students wrote a final test for Animal Farm.

We started off class with silent reading, and then students wrote a reading response to their independent novel study. After that, they took some notes on adjectives, and we continued working on the Sightlines collages. This was out last class to work on them.

During the second half of class, we started watching "Fantastic Mr. Fox" as a wrap-up to our short story unit. We will finish a plot analysis of the movie next class.

We started off with some Russian history; we discussed Stalin's Five Year Plans and Russia's involvement in WW2 (there were notes associated with this). After that, we looked at propaganda examples through Bugs Bunny and a 'Duck and Cover' advertisement. We then read and discussed Chapter 8 in Animal Farm.

We started off the day with practice on 'Parts of Speech' and discussed some of the questions for "The Blue Bead". After that, we read and discussed two satire pieces, "The Sacred Rac" and "Sentry". Students completed questions in class. After that, students started working on a narrative paragraph.

Today we started off with silent reading, notes on pronouns, and notes on foreshadowing. We also watched the NFB video of "The Hockey Sweater", as we read the story yesterday.
We then read the play "The Monkey's Paw" as a class; thank you to my readers! After students completed questions, we watched the Simpsons adaptation of the story.

We started off today learning about the following types of government: dictatorship, communism, democracy, and fascism. Students completed a chart for this. We then read, discussed and worked on questions for Chapter 7 in Animal Farm.

We started off today with 'Parts of Speech' practice. I then proceeded to show personal pictures of Third World countries I've visited (to create imagery for the short story we read today). We discussed certain characteristics of poorer countries, such as shelters, types of jobs, the education systems, conflicts with nature in tropical countries, etc. We then read and discussed the story "The Blue Bead".

We started off class today with practice on 'Parts of SPeech'. We then finished discussing "The Interlopers", worked on questions and watched the short film version of the story. After that, students did an analysis of four Pixar shorts.

Students started off class with silent reading. They were then allotted time to work on their rough copies for the 'Letter to Ms. Jones' assignment. After that, we read and discussed the short story "Catch" and worked on corresponding questions.

Today we started off with a quiz on Chapters 1-5 in Animal Farm. We then discussed the rivalry of Trotsky and Lenin during the Russian Revolution, as it parallels the conflict between Napoleon and Snowball in Animal Farm (there were notes provided for this). We then read Chapter 6 in teh novel and worked on corresponding questions.

To start off class, we discussed the beginning of the Russian Revolution and the significance of Vladimir Lenin (as it relates to Animal Farm). If you were absent, there were notes provided for this. After that, we read and discussed Chapters 4-5 in Animal Farm and worked on corresponding questions. During the second period, we watched the first half of the movie Animal Farm (as we are halfway through the novel). After that, students got into groups and discussed certain stereotypes of animals in media. George Orwell uses specific animals to represent specific people, so we discussed the symbolism of this.

To start off today, I explained the Independent Novel Study program for English 8. I then took the students up to the library and Mr. Wilson gave the students an orientation of the library and taught them how to search for novels usinf L4U. Students had time to browse around at novels and start reading the ones they picked.

After that, students took notes on types of irony and we looked at a couple different examples in the media. We then read the article "Doin Time"; students got into groups to discuss corresponding questions about the article, motivations for committing crimes, and stereotypes of criminals. We then read the short story"Thank You Ma'am" and started working on a writing assignment associated with the story.

 On Thursday's class, we read and discussed the story "Once Upon a Time". We also looked at the historical context of the story and talked about the Apartheid. Students completed corresponding questions for the story. We also read an article about the Oscar Pistorius trial and discussed the reasons/consequences for owning guns.

After that, we read the story "The Interlopers".

I hope no one got sick from the immunizations!

Students started off the day with notes on theme, setting, foreshadowing, and point of view. They then had time to work on their 'Thumbprint Profiles' (this was the last class given to work on them). After that, we read and discussed Ray Bradbury's story "The Veldt", and worked on corresponding questions. We also watched a short film adaptation of the story. We finished class by going over a 'Point of View' worksheet.

Thank you for working so well today Grade 9's!

We started off with a few more notes on 'Parts of Speech' and some review notes for 'Elements of Short Stories'. After that, we read and discussed "Lamb to the Slaughter" in Sightlines 9. Also, we looked at the role of women in the 1950', as it relates to the context of the story and explains Mary Maloney's character. Students completed corresponding questions.

During the second half, we watched the Alfred Hitchcock version of "Lamb to the Slaughter" and students wrote a formal paragraph explaining which version of the story is most effective. We finished class by playing 'Mad Libs'.
