Great presentations today you guys! Presentations can be very challenging, so I am very proud of you for getting through it!

Activities:

  • Re-cap: Innovations in transportation during the Industrial Revolution
  • Worked on questions related to pages 140-142  in Crossroads
  • Students presented their projects (inventions of the Industrial Revolution)
  • Powerpoint and notes: The transformation from the "cottage industry" to the "factory age"
  • Casey did a lesson on child labour and showed us a clip about children in the coal industry (she will be giving you a quiz tomorrow on her presentation)
  • We talked about chimney sweeping and looked at a short clip from the movie "Mary Poppins"
  • Watched 15 mins of a BBC video called "The Children Who Built Victorian Britain"
  • Worked on questions related to pages 143-146 in Crossroads

  • Introduced the topics for the literary paragraph on The Hobbit: Students will be asked to write a paragraph on The Hobbit on their test (Monday, June 2, 2014). Students were given 2 topics to choose from in advance. They will not be expected to memorize quotes, but they must include examples from novel. We looked at 3 different examples of paragraphs for The Hobbit (with a topic involving Thorin's transformation) and we discussed ideas on how to structure the  paragraph. Here are the topics:
1. Discuss Bilbo's transformation in the novel
2. Identify the reasons why Bilbo is a good hero

  • We did a group activity on themes from The Hobbit
  • We started working on a narrative paragraph
  • We spent the second half of class working on the Bilbo's Journey Project (This was your last class to work on this)

Activity: 
  • Re-cap: The agricultural revolution in Britain
  • Evolution of agriculture: Students were split up in groups of 3-4 and were assigned to as specific section from an article titled "How was Agriculture Transformed?". Students summed up the main ideas from their section and we wrote the main ideas in a table as notes.
  • Factory work simulation: Students were set up in lines and experienced the type of work for assembly lines in factories.

  • I introduced and explained a project on the great inventions during the Industrial Revolution. Each student was assigned to a specific invention and they will present information about that invention to the class. We worked in the IT LAB on our research.

  • Worked on a w/s: questions from Crossroads-p.134-139
  • Watched an animation of Stephenson's "Rocket" 
  • Played 2 BBC interactive games: "Who wants to be a Cotton Millionaire" and "Mucks and Brass"

  • Worked on questions for Chapters 11 and 12
  • We looked at Led Zeppelin lyrics and their reference to J.R.R. Tolkien ("The Battle of Evermore", "Ramble On", and "Stairway to Heaven")
