English 8

We did a thorough overview of Chapter 5 in The Outsiders today. We analyzed the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost and discussed its relevance to the characters in the novel. We also watched some clips from Gone With the Wind to understand Johnny's fascination with Southern Gentlemen. Students then worked on questions and a vocabulary crossword.

During the second half of class, we brainstormed stereotypes of Greasers and Socs and students started putting together a collage of contrasting words and images that represent these stereotypes. We'll continue this next class.

For both English 9 classes, students wrote a quiz on Chapters 1-12 for The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Students were also given time to read Chapter 13 and 14.

We watched a couple of scenes from "Anne Frank: The Whole Story" as a reference for some of the events that Shmuel describes in his description of Auschwitz. We also started a final project, which we will continue next class.

Planning 10

Today we went through an overview of Worksafe hazards in each job industry. Students were assigned questions as we went through a PowerPoint presentation. After that, students were divided in groups and had to analyze 10 images depicting hazards. For each image, they had to identify the potential hazards and suggest a way for the worker to prevent the injury. We also started watching a video on workplace violence, which we'll continue next class.

Today we did some more work with apostrophes and read Chapter 4 in The Outsiders. After that, students were assigned questions for Chapter 2-4, and independent reading for Chapter 5.

Today we went through the events in Chapter 9-11 in the Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and discussed the history of Book Burning, Jewish Star/Swastika symbols, and Eva Braun. Then students were assigned questions and independent reading for Chapter 12.

Planning 10

Today we finished the movie The Pursuit of Happyness ('Happyness' is purposefully misspelled) and watched a quick interview with the real Chris Gardner. Students also finished the movie sheet booklet.

Today students took some notes on apostrophes. After that, they were given a chart to fill out information on each of the Greaser members from The Outsiders. I posted all the character sketches completed last week around the room and students circulated around the class filling out the chart. After that, students were given time to read Chapter 3.

Today I allotted some time to read Chapter 11 in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and we finished the movie Life is Beautiful. Afterwards, students completed a chart comparing the relationships between Guido and Joshua, and Bruno and Ralf.

English 8

Today students completed a hand-out on 'capitalization', and we discussed the events from Chapter 1 in The Outsiders. We also went over the Chapter 1 worksheet as a class. Students were then allotted time for independent reading.

During the second period, students were split into groups and had to create a character sketch for one of the 'Greasers' on chart paper. They look fantastic! We'll be displaying the sketches next class to look over.

Over the past few days, students worked on a writing  assignment for Chapter 8 in the Boy  in the Striped Pajamas; The task was to write a letter to Bruno's grandmother from his perspective of the events in the novel so far. Students were also allotted time for independent reading. They should read up to Chapter 11 by Monday. In addition, we also started watching the movie Life is Beautiful; we will be doing a comparison with the Boy in the Striped Pajamas after the movie.

We've been finishing up some short story assignments and transitioning into our new unit on The Outsiders this week. The Sightlines Collages were due today, and the character paragraphs are due next class. Today we looked at the historical context of The Outsiders, and some of the 60's slang meanings. We also read the first chapter of the novel.

Planning 10

This week, we've been looking at workplace safety and using lessons developed by WorkSafe BC. Yesterday, we looked at the video "The Lost Youth" and discussed hazards int eh workplace, effects of injuries, and prevention. Students worked on a 'Job Safety Brochure', which was to be turned in today. Today we also looked at Rights and Responsibilities of workers and Employers.

Planning 10

Today students worked in groups on a vision board for occupations in Revelstoke. They had to pick four popular job occupations or industries and evaluate skills needed, their advantages, education/training needed, and demand. They displayed all of the information on a poster board with images and magazine clippings. You guys did great work!

Enjoy the weekend!

Over the past few days, student wrote a prats of speech quiz, and we've been reading through Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Students read independently today and are supposed to finish Chapter 6 for homework. We've discussed some of the key inferences and some of the characterization in the novel. Today we also looked at a North American Propaganda cartoon called 'Education for Death'.

Fantastic teamwork today!

Today students wrote an open-book parts of speech quiz and reviewed for their test this Friday; they worked in groups on review booklets and then we played a game of Jeopardy.

We spent another day today working on resumes in the IT LAB. This was the last class to do this. I asked for resumes to be submitted at the end of class. Also,  I handed back marked rough copies of your cover letters with comments; this was to be typed up.

Today we worked on some Parts of Speech practice and cpmpleted a plot analysis for Fantastic Mr. Fox. Students then started writing a descriptive character paragraph, which we'll continue next class.

On Friday we continued to work on the character paragraph for the Sightlines 9 unit, and went through some information about WWII (as our current unit is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas). Today we read Chapters 1 and 2 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and worked in booklets.

Planning 10

Today we went to the IT Lab to work on resumes. Most students completed this using myblueprint.ca. We also watched a reality TV episode of "The Job Interview" and students brainstormed and wrote out ten tips for an interview.

Students wrote a final test for the Short Story unit. We also worked on character paragraphs and did some review. Since students worked so well, I'm giving more time Friday to work on their paragraphs.

Today students completed an exercise on verbs and adjectives and continued working on their Sightlines collages. We will continue working on them this week.

Continuing on with our 'World of Work' unit, students continued working in their booklets. We then  watched some demos of bad interviews on Youtube, and looked at a bunch of examples of resumes and rules for writing resumes. I also explained the purpose and format for 'the cover letter'. Some students started working on a rough copy for a cover letter.

Today students completed a hand-out on nouns and pronouns, and we finished going over the questions for "Ambush". After that, we started a short story final project collage.
