English 10: Blocks 5/6

During the first part of class, we watched John Greene's "Crash Course on Romeo and Juliet", we played a Jeopardy review game for R&J, and we went down to the theatre to watch the Drama Department's Christmas performance. During the second part of class, we had our "Romeo and Juliet" final tests and started watching the movie "Warm Bodies" (a zombie interpretation of R&J).

It was an honor to perform the Ceremony of Twelves! Thank you for your Childhood!

Silent Reading and Grammar (commas)
During class, we did a simulation of the Ceremony of Twelves from The Giver. Each student was assigned a random number, and their their job assignment was announced by our voluntary Elders. Some of the job assignments included: Doctor, Instructor of Elevens, Street Cleaner, Food Delivery Worker, ext. Students then had to write a journal response expressing how they would feel if jobs were assigned to them at a young age. Thanks for the wonderful participation! After this activity, we read Chapter 14 in our novels.

Silent Reading
We spent the remainder of the first period in the library working on the creative assignments for The Giver.

During the second period of class, we had a pop-quiz on Chapters 1-11. We also had a grammar lesson on commas. We then read Chapter 12 and started Chapter 13. Furthermore, we worked on questions and went over them as a class.

We are almost at the end of R&J!!! I have been very impressed with the engaging discussions!

We started off class with a quiz for Acts Two and Three, and then spent the rest of the period in the library working on the R&J creative assignments. Most students finished today.

For the second period, we started off with a lesson on semi-colons. We then went over yesterday's scene questions and read R&J up until the very last scene. We watched the movie and completed questions respectively. At the very end of class, I showed a "teaser" of the first scene of the Leonardo DiCaprio version of R&J (just to get the students as excited as I am to watch it!)

We started off class today reading silently Chapter 8 in The Giver. We continued with grammar (periods). We then completed questions, read Chapter 9 aloud and started a Character Web for Jonas, Lily, Mother and Father (we completed this in groups). For the second half of the period, we worked in the library on a creative assignment for The Giver. Students have the choice either to create an agenda, a map of The Community, or a brochure. We will have more library time to work on this.

It was a very exciting day for Shakespeare today. We completed a quiz for Act One and did some grammar exercises (quotations). We then read Act Two, Scene Two of "Romeo and Juliet" (the famous balcony scene). We then worked on corresponding questions and watched the scene from the movie.

I'm sorry I was away on Tuesday, but I hope The Outsiders test went well!

Today, we took notes and completed exercises on apostrophes. Then, as an introduction to our next novel study, The Giver, we discussed the term "Utopia". Students were split into groups and had to create rules for a perfect society. We read Chapters 1-3 from The Giver and completed questions for Chapter 1. We also started writing down a list of rules that exist in the novel's community.

Romeo and Juliet meet!!!

For both blocks 1/2 and 5/6, we completed Act One of "Romeo and Juliet" and started Act Two (Prologue and Scene 1). We also discussed Mercutio's speech about Queen Mab and watched a short animation illustrating the fairy. We worked on corresponding questions for the scenes and finished watching Act 1 of the movie. Furthermore, we finished the movie "Shakespeare in Love."

After silent reading, students had an open-book grammar quiz. We then went over the 'Dynamic Characters' worksheet and played a Jeopardy review game. We finished off class working on a vocabulary crossword.

Have fun in the snow this weekend!

Today, we reviewed the parts of speech and completed a pop-quiz for Chapters 10-12 of The Outsiders.  We then finished the movie. At the end of class, I handed out a worksheet with a crossword and a list of all the vocabulary words we looked at in previous chapters. We will work on the crossword on Monday, but there will be a vocabulary section on The Outsiders Final Test, so you may need to review the words.

I decided to give the class an additional lab period to finish their projects because many people were struggling with the essay portion. Some students handed in both portions of their projects already --
 thank you!

For the second half of the class, we did an introduction to Shakespeare. I showed a PowerPoint as students completed some notes. We looked at Shakespeare's life and work, the conventions of Elizabethan theatre, sonnets, and the structure of Iambic pentameter.

After, we did an exercise in which we analyzed the prologue for Ian Doescher's Shakespearean version of "Star Wars". We verified its structure to see if it followed the Shakespearean form of sonnets and Iambic pentameter. For the rest of class, we watched the first 20 minutes of the movie "Shakespeare in Love".

We started off class working on punctuation usage problems and prefixes. I then showed a Powerpoint explaining the structure of literary essays and the process of developing a thesis statement. I also demonstrated how to complete a plan for a 'compare/contrast' essay (by using Animal Farm and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas as examples). I gave students some time planning their essays as well.

We also read the story "The Ninny" and answered questions respectively.

During the second portion of the class, we worked in the library on the short story final project.

We had a Remembrance Day Assembly in the morning. Following the presentation, we went over the analysis for the story "The Face In The Pool", we read the poem "Envy" in Sightlines 10, and created a Venn diagram identifying the similarities and differences between the two texts. We also had a discussion about narcissism and social media, and watched the following video clip:

We worked a bit more on punctuation and sentence fragments. Students were then divided into groups of 2-3 and had to peer-edit each other's character paragraphs for "The Bicycle". Final copies are due next class. I then introduced the final project for our short story unit. The project is composed of two parts: a creative portion and a comparative essay.

Students have to pick a character from The Outsiders and write a letter asking for advice, and a letter giving advice. We then spent the rest of class in the I.T. lab working on our newsletters for The Outsiders.

Today we worked on coordinating conjunctions and read Chapter 5 of The Outsiders. We also went over Chapter 4 questions and vocabulary. We finished off the rest of class working on a mind map identifying the types of conflict in The Outsiders.

We started off class today with grammar editing. Students were then given a booklet of writing  composition samples from past Provincial Exams. They had to evaluate the samples by assigning a mark based on the Provincial Exam Rubric. We went over them as a class together. Then, students were given a mock-test task. They had 30 minutes to write a composition based on the following topic: "We are products of our own choices".

To finish off class, we read the short story/myth "The Face in The Pool".

We started off class with silent reading and a worksheet on subjects and predicates. We also went over questions for Chapter 1 for The Outsiders and students were given time in groups to finish their Character Profile Charts. We then continued reading Chapter 3 in the novel.

During the second half of the period, we looked at a Powerpoint outlining main characteristics/events of the 1960's. We then watched "John Green's Crash Course of the 60's". After this, students started a collage identifying the difference between "Greasers" and "Socs".

The mind maps and title pages for "This is a Test" look great so far!

For grammar, we worked on  main/subordinate clauses. We also finished discussing "How To" instructions and watched Ted Talks: "How to Start a Movement". Questions were to be completed for this. We also looked at the short story "Borders" by Thomas King.

During the second half of the period, we looked at the Provincial Exam structure and the expectations for the written section of the exam. Samples of writing were posted on the walls all over the class and students circulated the classroom to evaluate them. Blocks 1/2 were fortunate enough to have Mr. Pfeiffer to them teach them about the exam yesterday. We also looked at the written rubric and the terms to know for the exam.

We started off class today with a lesson on sentence types. We also went over comprehension questions from previous texts we read. Students then had class time to either create a title page or a mind map for the play "This is a Test" (p. 8 in Sightlines 10). After this, students took some notes on point of view, character types, and genres.

I showed a Powerpoint outlining some background information on S.E. Hinton and we looked at Greaser slang words. We finished off class reading Chapter 1.

We started off class today with silent reading and a worksheet on interjections. Students then took some notes on irony and types of conflict. We looked at some T.V. clips to supplement our understanding of irony (the "Ironic" song, a short clip from "Mean Girls", and a short clip from "Modern Family"). We spent the rest of class reviewing elements of short stories for all of the stories we studied in class.

Students were then given time to work on their descriptive character paragraphs; I also demonstrated how to start writing a paragraph by using the 'Paragraph Planner'. We then went over the plot analysis for "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and started a review worksheet for the short stories that will be on the exam this Wednesday.

It will be another short week this week!

We started class today with a grammar review on parts of speech (there will be a grammar quiz this week). We also started our unit on short stories. First off, we reviewed some literary terms and basic parts of a short story. Make sure to get the Powerpoint notes if you were absent.  To transition from our Animal Farm unit, the first short story we looked at was the allegory fable "Terrible Things" by Eve Bunting. We proceeded to work on corresponding questions. We also started the story "Lather and Nothing Else" by Hernando Tellez. Finish this story for homework (it can be found in Sightlines 10).

I hope you all enjoyed the informative presentation today!

We started off class today with silent reading and some notes on conjunctions. The quiz on 'Parts of Speech' was handed back to the students and we went over it together. We also started working on descriptive character paragraphs. Students were given a list of characters studied in our short story unit; they must complete a paragraph describing him/her. Most students finished the 'Paragraph Planner' today.

During the second period, a presenter came to the class to discuss tobacco use. We also started watching the movie "Fantastic Mr. Fox"; we will be doing a complete plot analysis on this movie as a conclusion to our short story unit.

We also looked at the definition of allegories, symbolism and satire, and students started filling out an allegory chart for Animal Farm. In addition, we looked at TV clips demonstrating propaganda and the use of satire.

Great peer-editing work today Grade 8's!

Today, we spent time silent reading and completed a worksheet on adverbs. Students were then assigned in pairs to peer-edit their "Thank You Ma'am" letters.

After that, we went over different texts from narratives and identified the point of view of the narrator (1st person, 2nd person, etc.). We proceeded to to a lesson on themes; I showed the students 4 Pixar short films, students were divided into groups, and had to write down the central themes for the films on chart paper. We went over all the ideas on the board together.

We also took more notes on 'setting' and 'types of characters'. We finished the class by going over the answers to the story "Catch".

Today, you completed a worksheet practicing the use of verbs. Then, we finished reading "The Veldt", worked on corresponding questions and watched the short film based on the story. Students also completed notes on the parts of plot.

During the second half of class, we read an article from the perspective of a teenager in prison.  We discussed stereotypes and motivations of young criminals. We proceeded to read the story "Thank You Ma'am" and work on corresponding questions. We finished off the class with a couple rounds of "Mad Libs".

I then told you another oral story and we went over the parts of plot briefly. We finished the class by reading Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart".

It's almost Friday!

Today, we did some more work on nouns. We also finished the film version of the short story "Harrison Bergeron". We discussed some of the main differences between the story and the film. Students were then required to write a literary paragraph pertaining to the story:

In one paragraph, explore how Kurt Vonnegut suggest that equality is dangerous and not worth striving for (your answer should be based on the SHORT STORY and not the film). 

I then showed you a Powerpoint Presentation. We talked about fables, George Orwell, Karl Marx and the events leading up to the Russian Revolution. You will be quizzed on the content of this presentation in the future. This information will help us understand the context and purpose of Animal Farm.

Great to see all of you after a long summer! I am excited to be working with you again!

Today, we started off the class with a grammar (editing) quiz. I also handed back your Mad-Lib worksheet from yesterday.

I introduced an Introductory Writing Assignment. You have the choice either to compose a personal credo (min. 150 words) or a formal letter telling me about your summer (1 page). I didn't assign this for homework because we will work on it again tomorrow. We also went to the library to retrieve both Sightlines 10 and Animal Farm.

Additionally, we did an exercise on themes and hashtags.  I was happy to see that some of you really enjoyed this activity.

Students were given 2 topics to choose from in advance. They will not be expected to memorize quotes, but they must include examples from novel. We looked at 3 different examples of paragraphs for The Hobbit (with a topic involving Thorin's transformation) and we discussed ideas on how to structure the  paragraph. Here are the topics:
1. Discuss Bilbo's transformation in the novel
2. Identify the reasons why Bilbo is a good hero

  • Re-cap: The agricultural revolution in Britain
  • Evolution of agriculture: Students were split up in groups of 3-4 and were assigned to as specific section from an article titled "How was Agriculture Transformed?". Students summed up the main ideas from their section and we wrote the main ideas in a table as notes.
  • Factory work simulation: Students were set up in lines and experienced the type of work for assembly lines in factories.
