English 9: Blocks 1/2

Today we finished Act 2 of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Students completed questions and we watched the Act in the movie adaptation. During the second half, students started working on a project for the play.

English 8

We spent the majority of class working through The Giver. We discussed Chapters 10-12 and students worked on questions. Students also read up to Chapter 17. In addition, we did a class simulation of the 'Ceremony of 12'; students were assigned to specific jobs in the community. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages to this system. Students also started working on a visual representation of the Giver's Annex Room.

English 8

Thank you for your hard work!

This week, we've been working on the use of periods and commas. We've also been reading The Giver, working on questions, and an 'Exposition Mind Map'.

English 9: Blocks 5-6

We started off with reading the story of "Pyramus and Thisbe" as it relates to "A Midsummer Night's Dream". We also watched a short claymation video adaptation of the story. We then started reading Act 3; students worked on questions for Act 3, Scene 1.

English 9: Blocks 1-2

We started off the day with silent reading and read Act 2, Scene 1 in "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Students then completed questions.

Planning 10

This week we talked a bit more about finance. We went through a PowerPoint and students completed a booklet on 'money' and finance vocabulary.

We have also started our unit on healthy living. Students brainstormed some discussion points on the concept of wellness. We also read and article and watched some video clips explaining teenagers and stress. Today, we worked through a healthy living booklet; students did some self-assessment of their own wellness and completed their own wellness wheel.

Planning 10

Today students were given more time to finish their 'party budgets' and we spent the majority of the class discussing the budgets and comparing prices. We then watched a video clip on 'credit and borrowing' as an addition to yesterday's lesson. There is a booklet assigned with the clip, but we'll complete it on Monday.

English 9: Blocks 1/2

Students were allotted reading time for the independent novel study. We then read the first scene in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and students worked on the first set of questions.

English 8

Today students took some notes on punctuation, and we spent most of class discussing the first five chapters of The Giver. Then students were allotted silent reading time to read Chapters 7 and 8, and we started an 'Exposition Mind Map' assignment.

Planning 10

This week, we continued discussing travel budgets; students were given lab time to finish their post-secondary budgets on Myblueprint.ca and research information for their individual travel budgets. We also looked at more economical ways of travelling (WOOF, working in hostels, teaching abroad, crew ships).

Additionally, we started to talk about debt and credit. I showed a PowerPoint and students completed a worksheet as we went through it. We talked about types of credit, pros/cons of credit, credit scores, and managing fiances. We also watched an episode of "Till Debt do Us Part" as an example of how credit can be problematic.

Today we also went on a field trip to Southside Market; students were given a generic grocery list and had to record information on different products. We then compared prices of things and discussed strategies for shopping more economically.

This week, students were allocated time to finish the novel My Name is Seepeetza and work on their journals. We also discussed the song "In the Walls of His Mind" and found some parallels with the novel.

This week, students wrote an Outsiders Test on Monday.

On Tuesday, we had a class discussion on 'creating a perfect society'. We also discussed the definitions of 'utopia' and 'dystopia'. We then read the first two chapters of The Giver.

English 9: Blocks 5/6

This week, we did an introduction to Shakespeare. Students read through a comic booklet about Shakespeare's life and we watched the first 20 minutes of Shakespeare in Love.

We also read the first Act of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and students completed corresponding questions, which were to be handed in today.

Also, Mr. Colvin came to do some Career Education stuff with the class.

Today students were assigned reading up to p.99 in My Name is Seepeetza. We then did a cut and paste activity in which students had to evaluate Seepeetza's education at home and at school. We finished off with some time to work in our journals.

Today students completed questions for Chapters 9-12 in The Outsiders, and we went over the quiz from last week. We then continued watching the movie.

Today we went to the theatre for a live webcast discussing jobs in the future and entrepreneurship. Thanks to all the people who put this together!!!

Today students finished and presented their posters on genocide. I then went through a PowerPoint on the history of Residential Schools in Canada. We also started reading a new novel, My Name is Seepeetza, which is an account of a young girl's experience in a Residential School.

Planning 10

Today we went over key points from the Employment Standards Act, and then watched a short documentary about the Louise Ogborne controversy that happened with McDonald's. We discussed harassment and how to deal with it in the workforce. Students also put together 'Focus Area' posters- we'll present these next class.

Thank you for your attention and focus today during our review.

If you were not in today's class, it is imperative that you get the notes from the Boy in the Striped Pajamas  review booklet. 

Students worked independently on the review booklet and questions, and we discussed the answers as a class. After that, students took some notes on themes. The questions from the review booklet will appear on the test. I also handed back Chapter questions for students to use to study.

P.S. There won't be anymore class time given to work on the Boy int eh Striped Pajama projects.

This week, we had a fantastic presentation from 'Avalanche Canada', and we worked on the 'Job of the Week Assignment' on Monday and Tuesday. Towards the end of the week, we watched the movie World's Fastest Indian and completed a viewing sheet, and students went for a scavenger hunt.

This week, we finished reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. We discussed major events in the last few chapters (character shifts and foreshadowing). Students also continued working on questions. Additionally, we started watching the movie adaptation, which we'll continue next class.

Don't forget your grammar notes for the open-book quiz tomorrow!

Over the past few days, we have been working through Chapter 6 in The Outsiders (I'll assign reading time tomorrow for Chapter 7). Yesterday, we read the chapter and worked on questions. Today, students worked on a "Trial by Fire" newspaper article, detailing events from the chapter. We also did a bit of review with capital letters.
